What is your new patient procedure?
We begin our new patient process with a diagnostic interview, where we ask questions about your history and gather information to help guide treatment. This is a collaborative process, designed to help us get to know you and tailor our treatment approach to meet your needs.
We want to ensure that you receive the best care possible. We know that this occasionally means referring you to another provider or recommending additional services. We will always be honest about this, and do our best to connect you with who you need so you can get started as soon as possible.
How does online therapy work?
We want your therapy experience with us to be as close to in-person therapy as possible. Therefore, our virtual office operates similarly to an in-person office. You will check in to your appointment online, electronically sign any forms that may be waiting for you, and we will be notified that you have arrived to our virtual waiting-room, just like if there was a front desk.
In order to do this, we utilize a HIPAA compliant virtual office service called Secure Video and a service called Zoom for our encrypted video conferencing. Our hope is that no matter where you are, you will be able to see us as if we are in the same room. The process is easy and we will walk you through how it's done no matter how "tech savvy" you are (or are not).
Do you offer free consultations?
We do offer free consultations to incoming patients who are concerned about goodness of fit or who have questions that they would like answered prior to starting treatment.
What sort of equipment is needed for online therapy?

The short answer is that if you have a computer or tablet that is newer than 2011 with video and speaker capability, you should be able to access services with little problem. Please review the list of devices at https://www.securevideo.com/equipment if you are unsure.
What types of patients do you see online?
We see adults, adolescents, couples, and families of all ages for a variety of therapy services. We require that most of our patients be Americans who are affiliated with an embassy overseas, but we will see other English speakers who are comfortable conducting mental health appointments in this language. Due to our professional licenses, we can also see persons residing in our home districts of D.C. and Virginia.
We take privacy very seriously at Therapy Solutions Abroad, so we want to make sure that we ensure transparency with all of our site visitors and clients. Please know that we will never knowingly sell your personal data, or use it for any purpose other than to facilitate service provision. Common examples of uses of personal data in a mental health setting are record keeping, communication with insurance companies, providing information to prospective clients, or to coordinate care with other services providers.
Since we are largely an online clinic, and have a website and blog, we also have the ability to encounter your personal data in these places. Below, please find some specific information on the technology we use to help us better serve our clients:
Who Do You Use for Your Website Developer?
We use Wix for our website development and our monthly mental health blog. All of our website and blog subscriber data are stored through them. If you contact us through our website, this is also where your contact information is stored.
Who Do You Use for Your Mental Health Services?
We use Secure Video for our video conferencing services. We have a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with them, and they maintain our compliance with the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
What Data Do You Collect From Me?
According to Wix, we receive, collect and store any information you enter on our website or provide us in any other way, such as the Internet protocol (IP) address used to connect your computer to the Internet; login; e-mail address; password; computer and connection information, payment information, blog comments, and appointment history. In these interactions, we may also receive personal information, such as your name, phone number, and reason you are considering mental health services. If you use the "Contact Us" buttons to get in touch with us, the information you transmit is also sent to our email account so we can respond to you promptly. Please note that we are therapists, and as such, are not specialists in information technology, so though we have the ability to, we do not currently analyze website visitor data or use it to target our marketing. Are you licensed providers overseas?
Dr. Sanness is independently licensed to practice professional counseling in Washington DC and Virginia. She has an L.P.C. (licensed professional counselor) certification.
Dr. Nelson is independently licensed as a Clinical Psychologist (LP) in the state of Virginia.
These licenses are restricted to the jurisdictions in which they are issued, and do not represent international practice licenses. As far as we aware, no such license exists. Many countries have their own regulations for the practice of psychology and counseling, and some have none. As a result, we are limited on what we are allowed to call ourselves abroad and where we are allowed to practice, because we are not and cannot be licensed in every country around the world.
Many countries allow us the ability to practice as therapists, as long as we do not claim restricted titles. Because of this, we need to state that we are not licensed providers (mental health counselors, psychologists, etc) in any country outside of the US. Before entering into any relationship we will always discuss our services with you and reserve the right to decline providing services based on your location.
